Oversized t-shirts need more fabric control than regular-fit tees. A fabric that feels fine on a standard body can look thin, twisted, or collapsed when the shoulder is dropped and the body width is increased. In our production experience, 220–260 GSM gives many streetwear brands a balanced result: enough weight for shape, enough softness for daily wear, and enough surface stability for artwork.
This does not mean every premium tee must be heavy. A clean 220 GSM compact cotton jersey can feel more premium than a poorly developed 280 GSM fabric if the yarn is smoother, the collar recovers better, and the wash is controlled. The best decision is not “highest GSM”; it is the GSM that matches the silhouette, fabric hand, climate, decoration, and target price position.
How different GSM ranges usually feel on oversized tees?

Pigment wash, garment wash, enzyme wash, and vintage wash can change hand feel, shrinkage, surface texture, and final measurements. The same 240 GSM fabric may feel softer and heavier after the right wash process.
Large screen prints, puff prints, embroidery, appliqué, and heavy front artwork need a stable fabric surface. Very soft or loose fabric can distort more easily during decoration.
A wider chest, dropped shoulder, and shorter body usually need more fabric body. A long, relaxed oversized tee can use a slightly softer GSM if the brand wants more drape.
When a brand asks for a premium oversized t-shirt, we do not approve the fabric by GSM alone. The production team normally checks the fabric hand, yarn quality, knit density, color stability, collar rib recovery, shoulder shape, sleeve opening, side seam behavior, shrinkage after wash, and how the approved sample looks on body.
A useful production rule is this: GSM sets the weight, but the sample proves the garment. If a 240 GSM fabric keeps the neckline flat, holds the shoulder line, supports the artwork, and stays within tolerance after washing, it may be a stronger commercial choice than a heavier fabric that looks impressive on paper but feels stiff in real wear.
A sensible first sample would usually be around 240 GSM cotton jersey or compact cotton jersey. If the brand wants a softer daily feel, 220 GSM may be enough. If the brand wants a firmer luxury heavyweight hand, 260 GSM can be tested. After the first sample, the final decision should be made after wash testing, on-body fitting, collar recovery review, and decoration testing.
GSM means grams per square meter. It measures fabric mass per unit area, not full garment quality by itself.
Many public garment weight guides place heavyweight t-shirts around 180 GSM and above, although brand positioning varies by fabric and market.

These numbers should be treated as starting points, not final rules. The same GSM can feel different if the cotton, yarn count, knitting tension, finishing, or washing process changes.
Choose less than 220 GSM when the oversized tee needs to feel softer, lighter, easier for summer wear, or more fluid on body. This can work well for relaxed streetwear, music merchandise, warm-market drops, or layered styling. The key risk is that the garment may lose the strong boxy shape that many premium streetwear customers expect.
Choose more than 260 GSM when weight is part of the design language. This direction can work for dense boxy tees, washed vintage tees, premium capsule releases, and brands that want a very solid hand feel. The trade-off is real: heavier fabric can increase cost, heat retention, sewing difficulty, shipping weight, and shrinkage-control pressure.
If the goal is a premium oversized streetwear feel, start with 220–260 GSM and develop the fabric together with the fit, wash, and artwork. Move closer to 220 GSM when softness and wearability matter more. Move closer to 260 GSM or above when structure, boxiness, and heavyweight brand positioning matter more. Before bulk production, approve the washed sample, not only the fabric swatch.
